Pronunciation Symposium

Teaching and learning pronunciation: Local and global perspectives on research and practice

Held in Cairns, Australia on 2 July 2012

This exciting event was held in conjunction with the ACTA International Conference on Monday 2 July 2012. In the morning we heard from invited speakers who are experts in different aspects  of research and practice in the field of L2 English pronunciation learning and teaching. In the afternoon we had the opportunity to interact with the speakers in smaller groups and discuss the implications of the issues they raised in the morning session. This provided an opportunity for an interchange of ideas relevant in both local and global contexts.

The Pronunciation Symposium Program is available here.

The speakers’ slides are now available.

Tracey Derwing: What should L2 learners be able to expect from their language classrooms? A research perspective.

Helen Fraser: Speaking and listening in the multicultural university. The information Helen presented is available on her website.

Lynda Yates: GAPS: Pronunciation and pragmatics in the workplace.

Ee Ling Low: Non-native English speakers and pronunciation teaching: Recent research and future directions.

Andy Kirkpatrick: Intelligibility and phonological features of English as an Asian lingua franca.
